How to Configure NTP Server and Timezone on Vyatta

Out of the box the Vyatta Firewall will sync to Vyatta’s NTP server pool. It really important to set your NTP server address to the standard time sources for your organization and delete the default NTP server.

Reason:This will make it easier to correlate the Vyatta logs with logs from other systems that are receiving time from the same NTP source. A difference of a  few seconds sometime can make it very difficult to compare the logs of separate systems.

By default, Vyatta set its internal clock in Universal time (UTC) a.k.a GMT:

show date

Before proceeding, verify that the Vyatta Firewall synchronize with default NTP server:

show ntp

To synchronize time with NTP servers, first we need to correct our timezone, otherwise the new NTP server will also synchronize the clock according to the GMT. Go to the configuration mode and verify the setting:

show system time-zone

Also verify the default NTP servers:

show system ntp server

Configure the timezone according to your geographical location using the following command, don’t forget to apply the change(s) using commit command :

set system time-zone Asia/Karachi
show system time-zone

Next, you can add the NTP server of your choice using the following commands, apply the changes and verify it. A good list of reliable NTP servers can be found here:

set system ntp server prefer
set sytem ntp server
show system ntp server

From the Operational mode, verify the synchronization with NTP server and timezone:

show ntp
show date

To Delete the NTP Server and TimeZone:

To delete the NTP server, go to the Configuration mode and issue the following command against the ntp server that you want to delete, apply the change and verify it:

delete system ntp server
show system ntp server

To delete the configured timezone, issue the following command. After deleting the configured timezone, Vyatta device will revert back to the default GMT timezone:

delete system time-zone Asia/Karachi
run show date

Hope this will help you!

Please Remember me in your prayers!
