Installing the Amazon EC2 Command Line Interface Tools on Ubuntu

This tutorial will explain that how to install Amazon EC2 Command Line Interface Tools on an Ubuntu.

Enable the awstools PPA :

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:awstools-dev/awstools

Update the apt packages:

sudo apt-get update

Install the pip and python package:

sudo apt-get install python-setuptools python-pip

Then install the newest available version of AWS tools:

 sudo apt-get install ec2-api-tools ec2-ami-tools iamcli aws-cloudformation-cli rdscli moncli ascli

Run the following command to install the pip for Python:

sudo easy_install pip

Use the following command to install the AWS CLI as well:

sudo pip install awscli

Create the directory to store the AWS credentials:

mkdir -m 0700 $HOME/.aws/

Create the file inside the directory that we have just created above with the name aws-credential-file.txt:

nano $HOME/.aws/aws-credential-file.txt

Enter your AWS access key id and secret access key in the following format:

AWSAccessKeyId=AGFDJOWMJ3ZHK45GQ6KA
AWSSecretKey=bt7akeHJAVZcm2%awlwJPlkoXoWv61Yr8bKG2UXM

Set an environment variable pointing to aws-credential-file.txt file:

export AWS_CREDENTIAL_FILE=$HOME/.aws/aws-credential-file.txt

Setup everything in current shell:

 source $HOME/.bashrc

Test your installation:

as-version
